Clay Sculpture & Jewelry

Artist Statement

Clay, be it stoneware, earthenware or polymer has held my interest for many years. I would describe my process of working as a tactile dialogue. The direction the work takes is guided by my willingness to see the unexpected and possible directions the clay is able to move along toward a final form. Over time, my focus has shifted from handbuilt stoneware and raku pottery to more sculptural work in polymer clay. Generally used by artists for small applications such as jewelry, I am now exploring how I can use the material on a larger scale to create relief sculptures as well as jewelry.

I am drawn to organic forms for inspiration. Themes of creation myths and man’s relationship to earth recur in my sculptures. I enjoy manipulating the surface of polymer clay and create forms to convey something about ancient and modern imagery coexisting within the work.

Texture and color are the elements I currently am focused on in creating jewelry. I love assembling segments in interesting combinations and experiment with many different configurations until the composition resonates with me as I hope it will with you.

Artist Biography

I have been an art teacher and ceramic artist for many years and have taught ceramics and sculpture to high school and college students as well as to adults. I’ve worked in stoneware, earthenware and Raku clay prior to discovering polymer clay about 15 years ago. After moving to Whidbey Island, Washington three years ago, I decided to devote more time to the creation of art and concentrated on using polymer clay. That tradition continues with yet another move to San Diego where I am currently making jewelry and sculptures with this versatile medium. I have participated in numerous group shows regionally in the Northwest, the East Coast, and hope to do the same here. Stay tuned.
